The Livestock Farm Complex, a teaching department established in 2008 under MSVE 2008, initially offered two undergraduate courses in Livestock Farm Practices, designated as LFP: 112 (0+1) and LFP: 122 (0+1), during the first and second semesters, respectively. With the implementation of MSVE 2016, these courses were merged into a single course, LFP: 2(0+2), covering Livestock Farm Practices over one complete session, moving away from the semester system. The department functions as an institutional farm, providing veterinary students with comprehensive training in scientific livestock and poultry farming activities. Students are actively involved in all aspects of animal management, including hands-on training in overall farm practices, management, feeding, breeding, health coverage, and the marketing of livestock and poultry. The department consists of four instructional farms: the Instructional Livestock Farm (Cattle), the Sahiwal Cattle Farm, the 30-Sow Teaching Unit, and the Instructional Poultry Farm, all of which are integral units of the College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara. In addition to undergraduate training, the farm complex also facilitates postgraduate courses, M.V.Sc. and Ph.D. research, as well as various institutional and external project works. The farm complex further supports farmers' exposure visits, demonstrations, and extension activities as needed.
The Instructional Livestock Farm-Cattle (ILF-C) was established in 1971, housing Jersey crossbred and Holstein-Friesian crossbred cattle. The unit provides teaching, research, and extension activities, offering research facilities to postgraduate students and faculty members. The farm is equipped with an Automatic and Manual chaff cutter machine, a Feed block machine, a Feed mill, a hydroponic production unit, and a vermicompost production unit.
Established in 2017, the Sahiwal Cattle Farm focuses on purebred Sahiwal cattle, sourced from Hisar, Haryana, for conservation and improvement. The unit aims to benefit society by propagating Sahiwal germ plasm among farmers outside the breed's native tract. The farm provides teaching, research, and extension activities, along with research facilities for postgraduate and Ph.D. students and faculty members. The unit is equipped with an Automatic chaff cutter machine, a Feed mill, and a sophisticated laboratory for molecular biology research.
The 30-Sow Teaching Unit was established in 1979 under the then Department of Animal Production and Management, with financial assistance from the North-Eastern Council (NEC). Since its inception, the unit has reared purebred Hampshire pigs and has distributed over 6,000 breedable pigs to Assam and neighboring states, as well as to various voluntary organizations, defense entities, and entrepreneurs. The unit houses Hampshire, Yorkshire, and HDK75 pigs and caters to the needs of students, farmers, and unemployed pig entrepreneurs.
The Instructional Poultry Farm (IPF) was established in 1973 with the primary aim of serving as a comprehensive educational and training facility. The farm is dedicated to providing in-depth teaching, practical demonstrations, and hands-on training on various aspects of poultry production and management. These educational activities are tailored to meet the needs of both students and farmers, ensuring they acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the field. In addition to its educational mission, the IPF is committed to fostering confidence and cultivating entrepreneurial qualities among students. By exposing them to the realities of commercial poultry production, the farm aims to equip students with the practical experience and business acumen needed to successfully manage and operate their own poultry enterprises. This dual focus on technical proficiency and entrepreneurial development is designed to prepare students not only for immediate roles in the poultry industry but also to empower them to become leaders and innovators in the field.
